Starting a fitness blog is an excellent way to make money and build a reputation in the fitness community.
I started this fitness website in 2016, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
For the last 7+ years, this fitness blog has helped me earn passive income and has allowed me to continue to brand myself as a fitness expert while maintaining my full-time career as a professional basketball player.
Starting a fitness blog in 2023 is challenging because there is a lot of competition (more people creating fitness blogs), but you definitely can make money fitness blogging if you have the right approach!
In this article, I will help outline the best ways to start a fitness blog so you get results as fast as possible!
How to Start a Fitness Blog in 2024
Whether you are starting a fitness blog to make money or simply want to build your brand as a fitness expert, check out these simple tips to help you build a successful fitness blog in 2023!
Step 1: Choose Your Niche (or Micro-Niche) & Make a Plan
The first step in starting a fitness blog to make money in 2023 is to take time and plan what “niche” you will focus on first. Better yet, I suggest you find a micro-niche and expand from there.
Your niche or micro-niche will help you with everything from choosing your domain name to choosing the articles you will write.
So, I suggest you write a short plan of your “niche” as a fitness blogger and make a small roadmap of how you see the future of your fitness blog.
You could choose your niche or micro-niche based on what has the best potential for making money, but I suggest you choose something you are also passionate about.
When you begin a fitness blog, you need to showcase your love of fitness to your readers. Not only does your passion need to be present in your blog writing, but you often need to remind yourself why you are doing this.
Having a blog is not always easy; it can be time-consuming and difficult until you develop a consistent flow of readers. However, it is easier to keep going if you are passionate about your writing.
For example, you can write about simple and effective weight loss tips if you are passionate about helping people lose weight. If you want to help people build muscle and develop an aesthetic body, write about that!
Determining the niche or micro-niche that you will mostly blog about is a critical first step because it will give you the best chance at making money with a fitness blog in 2023 and set the vision for your entire project!
Step 2: Choose a Domain Name
Choosing a unique, memorable, brandable domain name is critical to starting a fitness blog, no matter your niche.
You have to draw readers into your blog, especially in the beginning, when no one has heard of you.
But, how do you do that?
You come up with a great domain name!
If your fitness blog domain name is unique, memorable, and brandable, people are more likely to look closely at what you say and offer.
I purchased my domain name from GoDaddy, but there are other places you can purchase domains as well.
Try to make your domain name topic relevant or relevant in some way that can be “branded.” For example, I titled my fitness blog “Adam Kemp Fitness” because I believe my name is a brand itself as a professional athlete.
If you have a reputable name due to athletics or a certain accomplishment in the fitness industry, I suggest using your name as your brand.
However, if you are relatively new and looking to establish yourself, use a domain and blog title that illustrates your blog goal. Then, after users read your blog more often, they will associate your blog title and domain with useful fitness tips!
Choosing a domain name is the second step toward successfully creating a fitness blog!
Step 3: Hosting Your Website
Once you have purchased your domain name, hosting your website is the next step in starting a fitness blog to make money in 2023.
I recommend WPEngine or Cloudways.
Although I have recently switched to Cloudways hosting, I used WPEngine for years and consider them one of the best hosting providers for fitness blogs.
Cloudways is a good hosting system for new fitness bloggers because:
- It’s easy to use and has a simple interface.
- Cloudways offers managed hosting, meaning they manage server maintenance and optimization.
- They have various affordable plans, making it accessible for new bloggers with limited budgets.
- Cloudways offers excellent website speed and performance, which is crucial for a successful fitness blog.
- They offer 24/7 support via live chat, making it easy to get help if you have any issues.
- With Cloudways, you can easily scale your website as it grows, making it a good long-term hosting solution.
However, there are several advantages to choosing WPEngine.
For example, WPEngine support operates 24 hours a day throughout the year to assist you with any aspect of your hosting experience and exceed your expectations.
They also have a migration team that helps transfer any existing content from your prior host and configure it to perform on their platform.
Additionally, they do transfer domain registration and manage your entire portfolio in one convenient place.
Lastly, WPEngine provides free StudioPress theme templates for your website, which are some of the best themes for a beautiful, fast website.
If you choose WPEngine as your host, it only takes a few minutes to get your website up and running.

Step 4: Choosing a Content Management System (CMS)
When you start a fitness blog or any other website, you can use WordPress, Wix, or other content management systems.
I advise using WordPress because it is a simple platform that you should be able to figure out quickly.
A few reasons to choose WordPress include:
- User-friendly: WordPress is designed to be user-friendly and easy to use, making it a great option for bloggers with little technical knowledge.
- Customization: WordPress offers a wide range of customization options, including thousands of free and premium themes and plugins. This makes it easy to create a unique and professional-looking fitness blog that fits your brand and style.
- SEO-friendly: WordPress is built with SEO in mind and has many plugins and tools to optimize your content for search engines. This can help improve your blog’s visibility and attract more traffic.
- Security: WordPress’s strong security system protects your website from hacking attempts and other security threats.
- Community: WordPress has a large and active community of users and developers constantly creating new themes, plugins, and resources. This means you can easily find support, guidance, and inspiration for your fitness blog.
With WordPress, you are only responsible for the content of your website since WordPress provides theme options and easily integrates a variety of website-building options.
WordPress provides free themes and templates you can use when you start your fitness blog, but you can then begin hiring website developers if you would like a more advanced website.
Finding affordable website developers can be tricky because there are so many options. However, I believe the best place to look for affordable and talented website developers is the online platform Legiit.
Step 5: Make Quality Content!
If you want to make money with a fitness blog, the most important step is creating amazing content that people want to see.
I’d say the number one flaw with most people who begin fitness blogging to make money is that they only post a few articles or reviews and then give up posting new content too soon.
If you want to make a successful fitness blog, keep posting regularly and tell your readers that you aren’t going anywhere!
The success of your fitness blog begins and ends with great content. If you write content your readers enjoy and value, people will return more often and tell others about your website.
You need to understand who your readers are, what they are passionate about, and what they expect to get from your site.
If you struggle with content writing, there are a lot of freelance writer services where you can hire a ghostwriter. For example, on the freelancer platform Legiit, SEOAmber is a well-respected writer who can help write engaging articles for your fitness blog.
Not only should you publish new content on your own fitness blog, but you should also publish promotional content on other platforms as well.
For example, you can create some infographics to spread key facts about your brand or information that you believe is valuable in an entertaining and easily digestible format and pitch it to other fitness blogs for them to use.
You can make engaging content for your blog in many ways, but making unique and interesting content is the number one key to making money with fitness blogging.
Step 6: Building Your Audience
Once you have started your blog, you want to continue building your brand. Of course, you can make money fitness blogging by writing and posting articles to your website, but you can make more money in the long run if you continue building your brand in numerous ways.
A strong, engaged audience will ultimately help you make more money from your fitness blog.
To build a substantial audience for your blog, there are many options.
SEO
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing your website’s content and structure to increase its visibility and ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs).
By implementing effective SEO strategies, you can drive organic traffic to your fitness blog and potentially increase your revenue through monetization.
To start with SEO, you need to research the keywords relevant to your blog’s niche and optimize your content accordingly.
This can include optimizing your website’s meta tags, using header tags, and including keywords in your blog post titles, URLs, and throughout the post.
By implementing effective SEO strategies, you can increase your blog’s visibility in search engine results and attract more readers, who can become potential customers for your monetization efforts.
The length of time it takes to see results from SEO can vary depending on several factors, such as the competitiveness of your niche, the quality of your website, and the effectiveness of your SEO strategies.
Generally, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to start seeing results from SEO.
For new websites, it can take several months to start ranking for targeted keywords and drive significant organic traffic because search engines like Google need time to crawl and index your website and evaluate the quality of your content.
For established websites, it can take less time to see results from SEO.
If search engines have already indexed your website, you may start seeing results from your SEO efforts within a few weeks.
However, it’s important to note that SEO is an ongoing process, and even established websites must keep working on their optimization to maintain and improve their search engine rankings.
It’s also worth noting that SEO results can fluctuate depending on how search engines change and update their algorithms.
However, with consistent efforts and a focus on creating high-quality content, you can start seeing results from your SEO efforts over time.
Social Media
One effective strategy for building your audience is through social media marketing. Utilizing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter can help you reach a wider audience, increase engagement, and drive traffic to your blog.
Social media allows you to connect with your audience more personally and can help you build a community around your blog.
When I began this fitness blog, I got a lot of attention from Instagram. Although I don’t use Instagram as much anymore, I know it is still valuable when you are starting a fitness blog.
Guest Blogging
Guest blogging is another great way to increase your blog’s visibility.
By writing for other fitness blogs, you can introduce yourself to new readers and gain exposure to a different audience.
Guest blogging not only helps you to expand your reach, but it also allows you to position yourself as an expert in your niche.
By writing high-quality content for other blogs, you can establish yourself as a leader in the fitness community.
Networking
Networking with other fitness bloggers can also help you to build your audience.
Collaborating with other bloggers can introduce your readers to new voices in the fitness community and gain exposure to a different audience.
Networking can also help you build strategic partnerships to help grow your blog.
For example, HARO (Help a Reporter Out) is a service that connects journalists with sources for their stories. As a fitness blogger, you can use this service to network with journalists and grow your audience.
By signing up for HARO, you can receive daily emails with requests from journalists looking for sources on specific fitness-related topics.
If you see a request that fits your expertise or interests, you can respond to the journalist and offer your insights as a source.
By providing valuable information to journalists, you can establish yourself as a thought leader in the fitness community and gain exposure to a wider audience.
Your quotes and insights may be included in articles, which can help you build your brand and credibility.
If the journalist includes a link to your blog in the article, it can drive more traffic to your website.
HARO can also help you to network with other fitness experts. By responding to requests and connecting with other sources, you can build relationships with other bloggers, influencers, and experts in the fitness industry.
These connections can help you gain exposure to a new audience and open the door to future collaborations and networking opportunities.
It’s also good to note that, when responding to a journalist’s request, ensure you provide valuable and relevant information, not just plug your website.
Also, make sure you are following the journalist’s guidelines and instructions.
Overall, HARO can be a valuable tool for fitness bloggers looking to network and grow their audience.
By establishing yourself as a valuable source of information, you can gain exposure to a wider audience, build your brand, and network with other fitness experts.
Another great way to promote your new fitness blog is to talk to people at your local gym about it.
Whether you are giving diet advice or writing your Workout of the Day for others to see and use, the people you see at your local gym will probably be interested in what you have to say!
Don’t be afraid to ask people to check out your new blog!
Community Building
Lastly, building a community around your blog is important.
Hosting challenges, webinars, and Q&A sessions can create a sense of belonging for your readers and increase engagement.
Creating a sense of community can help you build a loyal following of readers who are likelier to engage with your content and share it with others.
As you attract new visitors to your blog online, you want to continue building your brand in as many ways as possible if you really want to make passive income with fitness blogging.
Step 7: Monetize Your Fitness Blog (How to Make Money Fitness Blogging)
Once you start fitness blogging, one of the final steps is to monetize your fitness blog and make money!
On-Site Advertisements
There are various options for monetizing a fitness blog, but one of the simplest options is to use Google AdSense. However, you might not make as much money with this option as others.
Advertising services like Google AdSense can be a great way to monetize your fitness blog and start making money.
AdSense allows you to place ads on your website and earn money every time a visitor clicks on one of the ads.
With AdSense, you don’t need to worry about creating products or services or finding sponsors, you only need to focus on creating high-quality content and driving traffic to your website, which makes it a great option for beginners who want to earn money with a fitness blog.
Using Google AdSense can help you start earning money with your fitness blog as soon as you have a steady stream of traffic.
AdSense is easy to set up, and the ads will be automatically placed on your website based on your blog’s content.
Additionally, you can customize the ads to match the look and feel of your website so they blend in seamlessly with your content.
By using AdSense, you can start a fitness blog to make money, and as your traffic grows, so will your earnings.
Affiliate Marketing
I prefer to do affiliate marketing to make money by fitness blogging.
Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money from your blog by promoting other people’s products.
By including affiliate links in your blog posts, you can earn a commission on any sales that result from your readers clicking through to the product.
Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money with a fitness blog without compromising the quality of your content, as you can choose products that align with your blog’s mission and provide value to your readers.
As you see on my website, I review various products and recommend products based on what I feel are the best.
Multiple affiliate marketing platforms exist, with Amazon Affiliate being the biggest and most well-known.
Impact is another great affiliate marketing platform that I frequently use.
Fitness blogs are a great niche for making money because there are tons of unique products you can review and tons of fitness niches you can specialize in!
Selling Your Own Products
As another option, selling your own products, such as e-books, online courses, memberships, coaching, or consulting services, is a great way to monetize your fitness blog.
When selling your own product, you have complete control over your products’ content and pricing and can offer your audience a unique value proposition.
Selling your own products can be a great way to monetize your blog, as it allows you to build a loyal following of readers willing to pay for your services.
You can increase conversions and make more money from your fitness blog by guiding your readers through a series of steps that lead to a purchase.
A sales funnel can help you to turn casual readers into paying customers, and it can help you to increase your revenue over time.
For some people, earning their first few dollars can take a while, but you can earn thousands of dollars per month fitness blogging with the right focus and persistence!
Step 8: Stay Focused & Don’t Give Up!
Of course, there are times when it’s okay to lose focus and relax your mind, but if you want to make money with a fitness blog in 2023, you will need to learn how to focus and stay consistent.
Planning on steps you want to make with your fitness brand and developing a road map for success is crucial for making money with your blog.
Additionally, there are many ways you can improve your focus daily too.
For example, you can try a healthy nootropic supplement to boost your focus when writing content.
One of the best nootropics I have tried for focus is Cognitune NuClarity.
Along with that, I also suggest you take up the practices of yoga and meditation to help relax your mind. Writing can be intense, so properly unwinding is important.
Yoga has long been known as an excellent way to keep your body and mind fresh, and practicing yoga can help you focus on your journey to make passive income with a fitness blog.
I subscribe to YogaDownload.com to access a huge library of online yoga classes.
Getting your blog to make money can take a while, but once you begin making passive income by fitness blogging, you will realize that your hard work was worth it!
