Detoxification of the body refers to the natural processes your body uses to eliminate toxins, waste products, and harmful substances through organs like the liver, kidneys, skin, and digestive tract.
It also includes lifestyle strategies that support these functions, such as healthy nutrition, hydration, exercise, rest, and fasting.
Although your body detoxifies on its own every day, modern stressors like processed foods, pollution, alcohol, and chronic stress can overload these systems.
That’s where specific types of detoxification come into play—helping you optimize your body’s natural ability to cleanse, regenerate, and rebalance.
As a professional basketball player who has relied on functional nutrition and detox strategies to maintain peak performance, I’ve personally seen the impact that these practices can have on energy, focus, and long-term health.

How Fasting Supports All Types of Detoxification
Fasting is a powerful, research-backed strategy to detox your body by giving your digestive system rest and activating autophagy—your body’s built-in cellular cleansing system.
When you fast, insulin levels drop and your body shifts into repair mode, breaking down damaged cells and flushing out toxins at a cellular level (Mizushima & Levine, 2010).
Autophagy supports deep detoxification by recycling dysfunctional proteins, reducing inflammation, and protecting against chronic disease. It’s not just about feeling lighter—it’s about helping your body function more efficiently from the inside out.
Types of Fasting
- Intermittent Fasting (16:8): Intermittent fasting is ideal for beginners. Boosts fat burning and supports autophagy (Patterson & Sears, 2017).
- 24-Hour Fast: Done once or twice weekly, this enhances cellular repair and oxidative stress reduction.
- Alternate-Day Fasting (ADF): Rotates fasting and eating days for advanced metabolic flexibility.
- Prolonged Fasting (48–72 hours): A deep reset that should be supervised, offering full-body detox benefits.
Fasting works synergistically with hydration, clean eating, movement, and spiritual practices.
Even short fasts (12–16 hours) during a detox week can improve focus, hunger regulation, and toxin elimination.
Additionally, fasted morning cardio is an excellent exercise for detoxing your body and cleaning yourself from within.
The goal isn’t deprivation—it’s renewal. Done correctly, fasting helps reset your body and mind, setting the foundation for sustained health and long-term vitality.

Detoxification isn’t one-size-fits-all.
There are several different ways to detox your body, mind, and spirit—each offering unique benefits depending on your goals and lifestyle.
Some types of detoxification focus on physical cleansing through nutrition and hydration, while others target mental clarity, emotional balance, or even spiritual renewal.
Whether you’re looking to improve digestion, support liver function, clear your skin, enhance focus, or simply feel lighter and more energized, choosing the right detox method can make all the difference.
These five approaches offer a holistic look at how to detox your body from the inside out—safely, naturally, and effectively.
Cleansing Your Mind – The Mental Detox
Most detox plans focus almost entirely on the body, but true healing starts in the mind.
You can’t expect to uphold healthy habits over the long term if you lack the mental capacity and perseverance to do so, which is why your first order of business should be to cleanse your mind of negativity, stress, and anxiety.
Without mental clarity and emotional resilience, even the most well-planned nutrition or fitness regimen is unlikely to stick.
This is why a 7-Day Detox must include a purposeful mental reset to quiet the noise, reduce stress, and realign your thoughts with your values and long-term goals.
Mental detoxing means learning how to let go of overstimulation, emotional baggage, and the chronic stress that clouds your decision-making and drains your energy.

Just five to ten minutes a day of deep breathing or guided meditation can dramatically reduce cortisol levels and increase self-awareness.

Pair this with diaphragmatic breathing—inhales through the nose, slow exhales through the mouth—to activate your parasympathetic nervous system.

Everyone needs a sanctuary or a space where you can be still and think clearly.
Whether it’s a corner of your home, a bench at your local park, or a quiet room with your favorite book and a candle, find a location that allows you to breathe, reflect, and detach from distractions.
Use this space daily for journaling, gratitude reflection, or simply being.
This kind of space becomes sacred during a detox, offering a buffer from the chaos of everyday life and the chance to realign with your goals.
Cultivate Positive Relationships and Eliminate Unnecessary Stressors
Emotional toxins are just as harmful as physical ones. If you’re constantly surrounded by negativity, judgment, or unrealistic expectations, no diet or workout plan can fully succeed.
During your detox, make it a priority to spend time with people who uplift, inspire, and support your health goals.
Equally important is learning to set boundaries.
Say no to commitments that drain you, reduce exposure to toxic environments, and give yourself permission to prioritize mental peace over pleasing others.
The Hydration Detox – Detoxing With Natural Cleansing Drinks
Hydration is one of the most overlooked but essential parts of any effective detox program.
Increasing your intake of natural detox drinks helps your body flush out toxins, support kidney and liver function, aid digestion, and reduce inflammation, all while improving energy levels and mental clarity.
There are countless natural detox drinks that can support your health, from antioxidant-rich teas to nutrient-packed juices.
However, I’ve chosen to focus on a few of the most powerful and accessible drinks that are effective, backed by science, and easy to incorporate into your daily routine.
These natural detox drinks are not only helpful for restoring balance to your body, but they may also support those looking to eliminate residual substances or simply cleanse the system after a period of poor eating, dehydration, or stress.
Although they aren’t guaranteed to work by any means, natural detox drinks can also help you eliminate certain substances from your body and are a useful option if you’re wondering how to pass a drug test.
When choosing detox beverages, whether homemade or store-bought, always prioritize those made with real, plant-based ingredients like berries, citrus fruits, leafy greens, ginger, turmeric, and herbal infusions.
Artificial “cleanses” packed with sweeteners, dyes, or unverified ingredients can do more harm than good.
Water – The Foundation of Every Detox
Before trying any fancy detox beverage, start with the most important one: water.
Clean, mineral-rich water is the single most effective drink for supporting your body’s natural detoxification systems.
Your kidneys, liver, digestive tract, and lymphatic system all rely on proper hydration to flush out toxins, maintain cellular function, and regulate waste removal.
Even mild dehydration can impair these processes and leave you feeling fatigued, bloated, or mentally foggy.
During any detox, aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water each day.
For example, a 180-pound person should consume around 90 ounces of water, with additional hydration coming from herbal teas or hydrating foods like cucumber and citrus fruits.
To enhance the detoxifying benefits of water, consider:
- Lemon Water: Adding lemon slices can increase hydration while supplying vitamin C and supporting liver enzymes.
- Cucumber or Mint Infusions: These natural ingredients offer a mild diuretic effect and refreshing flavor without added sugars.
- Himalayan Salt or Trace Minerals: A pinch of high-quality salt or liquid minerals can help restore electrolytes if you’re sweating more due to exercise or sauna use during the detox.
Drinking plenty of water also helps reduce cravings, supports fat metabolism, and keeps your skin clear and vibrant, which is a bonus many people don’t expect from a detox.
Green Tea
Green tea is one of the most powerful and accessible natural detox drinks you can include in your daily routine.
It’s rich in catechins, a group of antioxidants known to support liver function, enhance fat metabolism, and reduce inflammation.
Replacing sugary coffee drinks or energy drinks with unsweetened green tea is an easy way to cut back on excess sugar and calories while giving your body a clean energy boost.
Many elite athletes and nutritionists around the world incorporate green tea as a core part of their daily routine, and for good reason.
Personally, I drink green tea before workouts to increase focus and metabolism without the crash that often comes from high-caffeine options.
It provides a smooth, clean energy that complements the detox process and supports both mental clarity and physical performance.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is one of the most time-tested and versatile detox tools available.
During my own detoxification journeys, I’ve seen quick improvements in digestion, bloating, and abdominal fat storage when adding 1–2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered ACV to a glass of water before meals.
ACV supports digestive efficiency by promoting stomach acid production, which helps break down food more effectively and reduces post-meal sluggishness (Jafarirad et al., 2023).
It may also improve insulin sensitivity, making it easier for your body to metabolize carbohydrates and reduce fat accumulation—especially around the midsection.
Its natural cleansing properties make it ideal for any detox protocol.
Just make sure to dilute it properly and, if needed, use a straw to protect your tooth enamel.
A splash of ACV with turmeric in warm water with lemon can be a great way to start your day during the detox.
Kombucha Tea
Kombucha tea is a fermented tea that’s packed with beneficial probiotics, organic acids, and enzymes that improve gut health, which is a critical aspect of any full-body detox.
Your gut microbiome plays a massive role in nutrient absorption, immune function, inflammation control, and even mental health.
By drinking kombucha, you’re helping to repopulate your gut with healthy bacteria, which can improve digestion and ease symptoms like bloating and fatigue.
A healthy gut is often the foundation for effective detoxification, and kombucha can help restore that balance.
Just be mindful of sugar content in store-bought varieties and choose brands that are raw, organic, and low in added sugars.

The Elimination Detox – Detoxing By Eliminating Harmful Items from Your Diet
Another way to detox is to eliminate the “bad” parts of your diet for specific periods of time. Here are a few things you can focus on:
Alcohol
Reducing or eliminating alcohol is one of the most important steps you can take during any detox.
Although some people argue there are say that there are benefits of drinking red wine before bed, even moderate alcohol consumption can impair your liver’s ability to filter toxins efficiently, which slows down the body’s natural detoxification process.
When detoxing, it’s crucial to understand how alcohol affects sleep, metabolism, and hormonal balance.
Alcohol disrupts sleep architecture by interfering with REM cycles, leading to lower-quality rest and increased fatigue the next day, both of which hinder recovery and regeneration.
Poor sleep also raises cortisol and ghrelin levels, which can trigger cravings and make it harder to maintain healthy habits.
Additionally, alcohol prevents weight loss by reducing fat oxidation, increasing appetite, and slowing down metabolic function.
These effects are amplified when alcohol is consumed frequently or in large amounts.
For those struggling with alcohol dependence, detoxing the body becomes even more critical.

Sugar and Artificial Additives
By now you probably know that sugar and sugary foods and drinks are not exactly good for you, especially if you indulge regularly.
Over the long term, sugar can cause numerous chronic health problems, including diabetes and obesity, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, addiction, and more.
This is why you need to limit your sugar consumption as much as possible, especially if you’re doing a cleanse and are trying to detoxify your body quickly.
Replace sugar-filled foods and drinks with plain water and wholesome meals to feel sated, satisfied, and healthy throughout the day.
Processed & Ultra Processed Foods
Processed and ultra-processed foods have chemicals and other substances that are not good for the body, and you should avoid them at all costs, especially during your detox.
The chemicals and artificial ingredients in processed foods work together to pack on body fat, slow your metabolism, form diseases, and create a sense of lethargy (Nardocci et al., 2019).
All too often, we eat overly processed foods and fill nutritional gaps with supplements or ignore them entirely.
To get your body back on track, ditch the processed foods and fill your body with vegetables and fruit for a few, limiting the introduction of toxins that had you feeling gross in the first place and cleansing whatever remains from your system.
These foods are highly effective in reducing your metabolic rate, which is contrary to your general health and well-being.
Avoiding processed foods will help stabilize your metabolism over time and improve your body in many different ways.
The Sweat Detox – Purge Toxins with Exercise
Sweating is a simple and effective type of detox that you should not overlook.
Cardiovascular exercise and other workout routines will help increase blood flow, stimulate metabolism, and improve the rate at which your body can detox itself.
Depending on your level of physical fitness, there are many different workout programs that you can use.
High-intensity interval training workouts, such as Tabata workouts, stimulate your metabolism and detox efficiently and are some of the best options.
You could also try wearing a sauna suit while exercising or multiple layers of clothing to induce sweating and promote cleansing through the skin.
Sweating more doesn’t mean you are losing more weight, but detoxing your skin through sweating is an excellent addition to any detox program!
Using a steam room or sauna during your detox is a great way to boost the effects of all your other cleansing efforts.
Both the infrared sauna and the steam room help you by:
- Increasing Your Circulation
- Making You Sweat
- Cleaning Your Skin
- Cleaning Your Body Internally
Along with these benefits, using a sauna or steam room is a perfect way to relax and drain stress out of your body.
The heat and therapeutic setting can have immediate impacts on your physical and mental stress levels.
Although you should always consult a doctor before attempting to treat a specific issue with a steam room, sauna or anything else, infrared saunas and steam rooms can be beneficial in the treatment of:
- Hypertension
- Post-myocardial infarction
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Chronic pain
- Chronic fatigue
- Cognitive heart failure
There is a large number of health benefits that you can find from both saunas and steam rooms, especially if you are using them correctly.
Absorption and Adsorption Detoxifiers: Bentonite Clay & Activated Charcoal
Some detox methods rely on compounds that absorb or adsorb substances in the digestive system to assist with toxin removal.
Two of the most well-known options in this category are bentonite clay and activated charcoal.
Both have been used for centuries but have important considerations.
Bentonite Clay
Bentonite clay is a naturally occurring substance formed from volcanic ash, most notably sourced from Fort Benton, Wyoming.
It’s historically been used as an internal cleanser, particularly for gastrointestinal issues like bloating, gas, and constipation.
The clay’s effectiveness comes from its negatively charged molecules, which are capable of binding to positively charged toxins in the digestive tract through a process called adsorption (Thimm et al., 2001; Tahir & Rauf, 2006).
This mechanism may help the body excrete heavy metals and other waste products more efficiently.
Potential Benefits:
- May aid in reducing bloating and GI discomfort
- Could support the detoxification of certain metals or environmental toxins
- May help promote a more balanced gut environment
Potential Risks:
- Overuse can lead to nutrient deficiencies, as it may also bind to essential minerals
- Not recommended for long-term use without medical guidance
- Contaminants (e.g., lead or arsenic) may be present in poorly sourced products
- May cause or worsen constipation in some individuals
While generally recognized as safe in small amounts, it’s essential to use food-grade bentonite clay from a reputable source and consult a healthcare provider before beginning a detox regimen involving internal clay use.

Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is a highly porous substance traditionally used in emergency settings to treat certain types of poisoning or overdose (Chin et al., 1970).
It works by binding to toxins in the stomach and intestines, preventing their absorption into the bloodstream.
Some wellness advocates recommend using activated charcoal periodically during a detox to help eliminate environmental toxins or reduce gas and bloating.
However, routine use is controversial and should be approached with caution.
Potential Benefits:
- May reduce gas and bloating
- Effective for binding certain drugs or toxins in acute settings
- Commonly found in short-term detox or hangover remedies
Potential Risks:
- Can interfere with absorption of medications and supplements
- May lead to dehydration or constipation if not taken with adequate water
- Lacks robust evidence for long-term detox or preventive use
If you decide to try activated charcoal, it should be taken at least 1–2 hours away from any medication or supplements, ideally closer to bedtime, and never as a daily habit without medical supervision.
